Even with the crazy summer schedule (mentioned here) and all the ongoing house projects, I have been trying to squeeze in a little reading.
I did not always love to read. But, here is what I have discovered!
The day feels so much more relaxed if I intentionally sit down and read. Even if it is just for five minutes.
Reading is my mommy “time-out”.
It’s one of those luxuries that I have been wanting to make time for. But let’s be real here, most of us don’t have much spare time. It is way too easy to let daily stuff eat up the hours!
This is why I have made the unofficial “goal” of trying to read one book a month.
I have decided to treat it like a necessary part of my week instead of an afterthought. I schedule reading time. Apparently, people have used this “scheduling” method for other things too….like exercise or any other habit they want to adopt. It actually HAS really helped me be more consistent with running and workouts too! I am less likely to skip the workout or the reading time if I have it written down.
Here is the part of the struggle…some days I only have five minutes, and other days I have more time. Is just five minutes of reading worth it? Yes! As long as a tiny bit of progress is being made, I am happy!
Let me share some of the books I’ve been reading recently!
Some of these books are actually cookbooks (hooray for food)….but here is the list of what I have read already -or- are planning to read this summer!
I try my very best to choose books that will fill my mind with positive things or will help me grow spiritually or personally. I believe with all my heart that filling my mind with good will produce good and filling my mind with junk will produce junk. Philipians 4:8 says “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–think about such things”.
I am careful with what I read or study.
Wild and Free by Jess Connolly & Hayley Morgan
I finally got around to reading it and am almost finished. I am liking it! Here is a little paragraph from the back of the book.

The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst
Overall, it touches on many issues us women have with “people pleasing” and how to help your overwhelmed schedule and underwhelmed soul.
Lysa could seriously be my older sister. I love her THAT much and think that we could be besties (in the most non-stalkerish way possible). Haha!!
The Whole 30 Cookbook
I made a few meals from the book and LOVED the Asian Zoodle Pho! I have considered trying the plan out…but ONE WORD.
DAIRY. Dairy is my life.
How to Hygge: The Nordic Secrets to a Happy Life
I am all about decorating…and trying to add a cozy/warm/fuzzy feel to my home. The trendy concept of Hygge is explained in this book and it is full of gorgeous pictures and some yummy recipes to Hygge like a true Nordic person.
Some of the ways I’ve implemented happy Hygge include: adding more fuzzy blankets, candles and indulging in comfort foods to celebrate seasons. Like….ice cream ALL SUMMER LONG!
Cherishing the time with friends and family is huge too. I try to be more mindful of being present when around others.
My So Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife by Sara Horn
Once again, I am a wee bit behind haha!!
I am excited to see what Sara learned from her Proverbs 31 Woman experiment.
I am sure it will be funny.
The Bible: Joshua: Study Guide by Jen Wilkin
While I have a 5-day-a-week reading plan going on right now…I decided to dive into a deeper study of the book of Joshua. Jen titles this study as “Joshua: Every Good Promise Fulfilled”.
I can’t wait to see what can be learned about God through this book.
Start with Amen by Beth Guckenberger (Being Shipped Soon!)
How I Learned to Surrender by Keeping The End in Mind. A friend recommended this book to me recently. I finally took the plunge and bought it from Amazon after checking for it at the library. I will hopefully be able to start this one in July! The below paragraphs are from the Amazon description…

Women of The Word by Jen Wilkin (Being Shipped Soon!)
How to Study The Word With Both Our Hearts and Our Minds. I recently found Jen Wilkin’s podcast and books….wow, I have been missing out! She has been blessed with an amazing blog, podcast, and women’s ministry. I am sure her books are just as great. I am excited to learn more about training my mind in order to transform my heart.
Romans 12:2 says “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will”.
Trim Healthy Table by Serene & Pearl (Pre-ordered)
I am beyond excited for this cookbook to come out in September! I have used their other cookbook to death.
Like really. The pages are falling out of the book.
Serene & Pearl have helped me overcome my fear of healthier eating and approach it in an “easy going” manner. They truly take the fearful and restriction mentality out of eating.
I have mentioned the Trim Healthy Mama way of cooking several times on the blog. Check out this yummy drink here (it’s helped me ditch Diet Coke & Starbucks).
