Over the next several weeks, I plan on sharing some helpful budget decor tips with you all! All of these tips have taken me lots of time, reading (books and blogs), and of course trial & error to come up with. I am finally ready to compile them into posts to share!
This week….are you ready for tip number ONE!?!?!?!
TAKE YOUR TIME!
I know. It’s easier said than done. If it makes you feel better…not a single room in our home is finished! There are one hundred things I would like to do or tweak! Honestly, I don’t think any home of mine will ever be truly “finished”. I love to let my home evolve with seasons of life.
Resist the urge to have your home instantly finished.
Ya know…even those amazing HGTV shows take months and months of preparation, measuring and shopping to produce the final product. And round the clock labor. Oh, and actual designers. They also have much larger budgets than most of us do!
Random furniture tip! Fight against taking the “easy way out” and buying a complete matching set of furniture. Matching sets can look very….flat….and matchy-matchy. Although it is easy and fast to just go out and purchase a “set”, it is usually more visually appealing if the furniture has an intentionally coordinated feel.
Mix yard sale items and low dollar decor with some higher priced pieces too. It is way cooler to have your home look like a reflection of you and your finds…not like the shelves of Target (although I do adore Target decor).
Go ahead and tell yourself that it is O.K. to take your time.
Here are some things that I do (or have done) to collect home items…
- Stop for a pair of FREE wood rocking chairs. They were in perfect condition!
- Brake for yard-sales. The dresser below our TV is from a yard sale. I paid $15!
- Search Craigslist weekly for the 9 drawer dresser I want. I am still looking for one!!
- Create an Amazon wish list and constantly add items to the list.
- Make a Pinterest board to inspire your shopping.
- Save for larger purchases where I feel better quality is important.
- Keep a running list of things I am looking for so I can keep my eyes out for them.
Keeping a list and then watching for items, helps to keep me focused and find better deals. I once found a large mirror at Kroger for $40! I also found a darling vanity stool at Meijer for $30! The tiny frame below came from Walmart! It was under $3. I pretty much never buy home decor from Wally World so…yeah…wow! The vintage book was from a library sale at a local middle school. I got it for 25 cents! The plant and pot were from a local flower shop, Mazie’s. The little gold fruit thingy was on the clearance aisle at Target for $1.25.
Encouragement: Give your home (and yourself) some grace. Be content with letting beauty develop over time.
Some of the best things take time. Practice some patience & you won’t need to buy everything all at once. What a wallet friendly tip right there!
Check out online tutorials or YouTube videos on how to DIY something you really want. Right now…I really want a coffee table like the pic below. A whole YEAR ago, I salvaged some vintage hairpin legs for this DIY coffee table. I can make this bad boy for a fraction of what I would buy it for! Wait! This one is listed for $346 on Etsy. I am pretty darn sure I can make it for FREE (or darn close)! I already have the legs and just need to salvage some more barn wood. Hopefully I can get this project checked off my “running list” soon! Hey…I’ve waited a year…time to get moving!
Have you ever waited for what seemed like FOREVER for just the right home decor item? I have. Sometimes years. I am currently waiting & saving to get one of Joanna Gaines’ rugs! Can’t wait for that day!
